Revised edition of Rapsodie espagnole

The world première of the revised edition of Rapsodie espagnole, RAVEL EDITION Volume X, will be performed by the prestigious Detroit Symphony Orchestra  under the baton of Fabien Gabel during three concerts, from the 9th to the 11th of November, at Orchestra Hall. The concert on 11 November (8 PM local time) will be live-streamed worldwide from the  official DSO website.  “The Detroit Symphony Orchestra feels a great affinity for French repertoire and even today draws upon its storied history of performing the music of Ravel under Paul Paray and many other outstanding conductors,” said Erik Rönmark, President and CEO of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. “We are very pleased to present the revised edition of Rapsodie espagnole, Ravel Edition Volume X, conducted by Fabien Gabel.”

RAVEL EDITION is thrilled to be collaborating with the DSO, cementing the long-standing musical collaboration amongst the American orchestral scene and artists from both sides of the Atlantic in promoting a global appreciation for Ravel’s oeuvre. “We understand the deeply rooted historical link that has existed for more than a century between the US and Ravel, first established by some of the greatest conductors in France to have directed the composer’s music, such as Pierre Monteux, Charles Münch and Paul Paray. It’s with great pleasure that we watch this tradition continue through the close bond between Fabien Gabel, a connoisseur of the French symphonic repertoire, and America’s orchestras, such as the dynamic ensemble that is the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, which has always presented passionate performances of Ravel’s works,” says François Dru, Editorial Director at RAVEL EDITION.

The 2023 revised version of Rapsodie espagnole by RAVEL EDITION has been produced based on sources archived both in the USA and France: the orchestral manuscript (Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, Austin), the 1895 “Habanera” manuscript (Yale University), the scores of illustrious conductors, such as Charles Münch and Pierre Boulez, and historic parts stored in the libraries of the Orchestre Colonne and Orchestre Lamoureux (Paris).

Staying true to RAVEL EDITION’s core DNA, this editorial process married the expertise of musicologists with the insight of esteemed performers. Consequently, on the peer review committee for this volume were conductors Fabien Gabel and Ludovic Morlot, composer Benjamin Attahir, and musicians from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. “I would like to thank RAVEL EDITION for the remarkable work carried out on Rapsodie espagnole,” expressed Fabien Gabel. “The corrections introduced were absolutely essential in providing clarity from a performance point of view, and have made the instrumentalists’ work considerably easier.”

Founded in 1887, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra is one of the largest orchestras in the United States. Through exceptional programming, dynamic communication and a string of awards for highly acclaimed recordings, the ensemble has earned itself a hugely successful global reputation. The orchestra also has a particularly close affiliation with French music, as demonstrated by its famous recordings of Ravel’s Rapsodie Espagnole, conducted by Paul Paray (Mercury) and Antal Doráti (Decca). This transatlantic artistic relationship has been carefully nurtured by the orchestra’s successive Musical Directors: Neeme Järvi, Leonard Slatkin and now Jader Bignamini.

RAVEL EDITION was founded in October 2018 to honour the works of Maurice Ravel with revised editions, produced in line with a novel concept that unites musicological and artistic expertise. The orchestral parts of these revised editions have now been used by more that 80 orchestras in 24 different countries across Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania. RAVEL EDITION’s publications are regularly recorded and have garnered high praise by the press internationally.
